I began drawing at around the age of six, and this passion grew during my high school years. Initially, my drawings were realistic, but they later evolved into more abstract forms.
When I embarked on my graphic design studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, I considered these early drawings as foundational elements for my further development as a graphic designer. Immersing myself in reading about visual arts and design from a young age, a habit I still maintain, keeps me informed about the current state of affairs in my field.
The purpose of this website is to showcase everything I have created or was created under my artistic direction over the past sixty five years. Not only the graphic work, but also these drawings, paintings, and other creations will find their place here. Step by step. Much of my graphic work originated during my time at Tel Design and later at Studio Dumbar, alongside numerous other designers from around the world who have worked in my studios over the years.
Another reason for creating this website is to address the misinformation that circulates about me and my studio. For instance, I never co-owned a studio with my late good friend Anton Beeke (unfortunately), and I certainly did not pass away in 2011. On the contrary, I am still very much here.
Therefore, this website stands as the only authentic representation of me and my work.
The aim is to regularly update this website with both older and recent works, as my archive consists of hundreds of projects. Some of them have gained recognition, but there are others that have rarely, if ever, been shown to the public, and I find that regrettable. Design remains my passion, so I continue to produce new works as well.
To the designers, photographers, illustrators and other creatives who have worked for me: I would like to credit your names on the projects, but because hundreds of projects were created during my time at the studio, I don’t always remember who made what. If you see a project on this website that you worked on, please send a message via the contact form so I can add your name.
Updates will be announced via my Instagram.
I hope you’ll enjoy it.
Yours sincerely,
Gert Dumbar
